Tender Buttons was founded in 2010 by artists Tess Denman-Cleaver and Nicola Singh.

Tender Buttons makes performance.

The performance we make is always developed in response to the landscapes in which it is made. Our events happen in warehouses, galleries, train stations and headphones, they fill whole islands and occasionally you’ll find us in a theatre auditorium.

Our projects provide frameworks for people to share experiences, attend to their environment and consider new ways of relating to the world. Tender Buttons’ projects consist of workshops, performance events, symposia, installations and public interventions. We engage diverse communities of people in the process of researching and making performance, and work in wide range of different settings.

As a company we are particularly concerned with how place affects people’s personal experience. In all of our projects we are working to make performance and contemporary art more accessible for people who are experiencing mental illness.

Tender Buttons was nominated for the Journal Culture Awards 2013 (Alice Bed), Northern Stage’s Title Pending Award 2013 (Sounds & Guts) and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation’s Breakthrough Fund 2014.

The company is lead by Tess Denman-Cleaver. Tess is an Artist, Researcher and Creative Producer. She is currently completing a PhD at Newcastle University, where her research looks at performance, philosophy and landscape.

Tender Buttons is based at The Northern Charter in Newcastle upon Tyne, where Tess is also a member of the Programming Committee.
